How to Design a Lakeside Home That Actually Lives Well

Introduction
A lakeside home in the Lakeport and Clear Lake area offers something most California residences can't: water, stillness, and a completely different pace of living. But designing a home that actually lives well on the lake requires addressing a set of practical and aesthetic considerations that are distinct from a Napa Valley wine estate or a Sonoma County farmhouse.
BDS Interior Design has worked with clients throughout Lake County, including Lakeport, Kelseyville, and Hidden Valley Lake, bringing the same level of design rigor to lakeside homes that the firm applies to wine country estates across Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties.
Moisture and Durability Come First
Clear Lake's proximity means elevated humidity levels year-round - and seasonal variation in moisture can affect flooring, cabinetry, fabrics, and finishes in ways that aren't immediately obvious during the selection process.
Material choices need to account for this. Hardwood flooring requires species and finish selection appropriate for humid environments. Cabinetry should be specified with moisture-resistant substrate materials. Upholstery fabrics in lakeside homes benefit from performance-grade options that resist moisture, fading, and wear - without looking like outdoor furniture brought inside.
Maximizing the Water View
The view is the whole point - and every design decision should be organized around protecting and framing it. Furniture placement needs to prioritize sightlines to the water from the primary living areas. Window treatment selection matters enormously: solar shades that preserve the view while managing glare are often the right call for west and south-facing lake exposures.
Low-profile furniture, strategic use of glass, and restraint in the use of large architectural elements on the water-facing wall all help maintain the connection to Clear Lake from inside the home.
Indoor-Outdoor Flow
Lake County living is outdoor living - especially during the long, warm summers. Lakeport homes with decks, docks, and waterfront access benefit from design that makes the transition between inside and outside seamless. Consistent flooring materials that extend from interior to exterior, folding or sliding door systems, and covered patio spaces that are furnished and designed to the same standard as interior rooms all contribute to this.
Color and Material Palette
Lakeside homes in the Lakeport area have a different character than wine country estates. The palette tends toward relaxed naturals - warm whites, aged linens, weathered wood tones, and accents drawn from the lake and the surrounding hills. This is not a style that benefits from heavy formality or the deep, saturated color palettes common in Napa Valley interiors.
Natural and woven shades - bamboo, jute, and grass textures - translate particularly well to lakeside interiors, adding warmth and texture while reinforcing the connection to the natural environment outside.
Storage for a Recreational Lifestyle
Lakeside homes are used differently than primary residences. Gear storage - fishing equipment, water toys, outdoor furniture, seasonal items - needs to be planned for deliberately. Mudroom and entry design, garage storage systems, and built-in solutions that keep recreational equipment accessible but out of the main living areas are worth the investment.
